The 27 km² John Forrest National Park is located in Western Australia 24 km east of Perth and is part of the Hills Forest . This park was the first national park in Western Australia and the second in Australia after the establishment of the Royal National Park . The park is south of the Great Eastern Highway .

history

Established in 1898 as a recreation area, the park was named Greenmount National Park two years later . A few years later, it was renamed to Sir John Forrest , the first Prime Minister of Western Australia. The park could be reached earlier by rail, the Eastern Railway, as early as 1890. This railway line was laid in 1966 and the old embankment including the Swan View Tunnel remained in the park.

landscape

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, buildings with a tavern were built in the immediate vicinity of the John Forrest National Park, which have now been partially restored. The National Park Railway Station, built in 1936, and the Swan View Tunnel are photographed as frequently as the National Park Falls and Hovea Falls in the park. There are barbecue areas, restrooms, hiking trails (John Forrest Heritage Trail, Glen Brook Walk Trail, and Eage View Walk Trail), and trails for horses and mountain bikes for visitors . Rocks protrude from the hard basalt rock in various places .

Marsupials such as kangaroo species, the koala , black-tailed marten , honeybuckle , dormouse , and birds such as honey-eaters and parrot species live in the park . There are also species of lizards , such as the Goanna .
Numerous eucalyptus trees and shrubs as well as other types of plants and mushrooms grow in the park.
