The Drovers Cave National Park is a national park in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia , 201 km north-west of Perth , 170 km southeast of Geraldton and 6 km east of Jurien Bay .

The area consists of limestone cliffs in which several caves have formed. The entrances to many of the caves in the park have been covered with canvas and are thus inaccessible to the public in order to avoid accidents and vandalism.

Some of the accessible caves are Hastings Cave , Moora Cave , Old River Cave, and Mystery Cave . Hastings Cave is known for its fossils .

history

Drovers Cave was well known to early explorers and stockmen ; its location near the Canning Stock Route meant it was often visited by cowboys (au-drover), hence its name. The first cowboy left his mark on the cave wall in 1886. Between 1930 and 1940 there were many other such visits. In 1973 the cave was measured and declared a national park in the same year.

Flora and fauna

The ancestral vegetation in the park consists of bushbanks , one-sides bottlebrush (Calothamnus quadrifidus) and parrot bush (Banksia sessilis). Animals include emus , honey bucket , western dormouse , short-billed hedgehog , western gray giant kangaroos , Australian bustards and many reptiles .
