The François-Péron National Park (English Francois Peron National Park ) in Western Australia is about 730 km north of Perth . It is named after the French zoologist and explorer François Péron and covers an area of around 525 km² on the Péron peninsula .

You can drive to the sheep farm with normal road vehicles. To drive in the rest of the park you definitely need an all-wheel drive vehicle with sufficient ground clearance. In addition, air should be deflated from the tires in order to make any progress on the deep sandy slopes. Driving in SUVs is generally not recommended due to the risk of getting stuck. Depending on the condition of the slopes, the approximately 12 km long, mostly single-lane stretch from Peron Homestead to the Big Lagoon is sometimes possible with such vehicles. The current state of the slope should be requested from the DEC office in Denham . The effort is worth it, as you are rewarded at the tip of the peninsula with spectacular color contrasts between the turquoise sea, the light sandy beach and the red sand of the park.

Project Eden

From around 1880 the Péron peninsula was used as a sheep farm. In 1990 the government bought the land back and declared it a national park. The Eden Project (not to be confused with the Eden Project ), started in 1995 by the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM), aims to create a safe habitat for endangered native species. The Péron peninsula was separated from the mainland by means of an electric fence, the introduced predators (foxes, wild cats) and the competing animals such as rabbits were exterminated using traps or poison bait. Eventually endangered species such as rat kangaroos , rabbit- nosed hawks, woylies and other native mammals were released.
