geology

The Mount Augustus and the Mount Phillip , which is about 35 km south-west, originated in the Proterozoic than in a Ursee sand and stone blocks in front of about 1,000 million years ago were deposited. These deposits solidified into sandstone and conglomerate , which may have been deformed by earth movements. These rocks cover large areas of the national park. Granite is 1,650 million years old under the sedimentary rocks .

Flora and fauna

At the ends of the draining slopes in the transition to the sand plains grow eucalyptus species and on the sand plains acacia species and mulga bushes .

In the park there are the emu , goanna and the red giant kangaroo . At the Cattle Pool on the Lyons River , a tributary of the Gascoyne River , there is a permanent pond with a species of cormorant , swan and duck. Corella and Kookaburra live in the park .

Aboriginal

Ooramboo: Aboriginal rock painting

The Aborigines of the Wadjari have lived in the area of the national park for thousands of years and found sufficient water there. Rock carvings at the Mundee , Ooramboo and Beedoboondu visitor areas testify to their presence, as do numerous stone tools that have been found.

Dreamtime stories have come down to us from the Wadjari , the most famous of which is that of a boy Burringurrah who fled an initiation because of great pain. He was then persecuted for violating tribal law. He was hit by a javelin throw, one of the usual punishments for violating tribal rules. He tried to flee anyway, but the Aboriginal women beat him, he collapsed and died.

Tourist information

The Burringurrah Drive (Burringurrah is the Aboriginal name for Mount Augustus ) is a 49 km circular route that can be driven with normal vehicles. The circular route gives an overview of the national park, rock canyons, petroglyphs , picnic areas, hiking trails and other landmarks.
