The Mount Frankland National Park is a 374 km² national park in the southwest of Western Australia , Australia . It is part of the Walpole Wilderness Area .
location
The park is located about 330 km south of Perth on the South Western Highway . The nearest towns are Manjimup , 65 km northwest, and Walpole , 20 km south of the park. After the nearby D'Entrecasteaux and Shannon national parks , it is the largest protected area in the area.
history
While exploring the area north and west of Albany in 1829, Dr. Thomas Braidwood Wilson on Mount Lindesay . From there he mapped the surrounding elevations, including Mount Frankland, named after Georg Frankland , the then Surveyor-General of Tasmania . The area around this granite ridge , also called Caldyanup by the Aborigines , was declared a national park on December 23, 1988.
To the area of 308 km² at that time, 2.6 km² was added in 2004 and a further 62.7 km² in 2005, so that the area of the park is 373.59 km² today.
Flora and fauna
Part of Mount Frankland National Park consists of "Jarrah" ( Eucalyptus marginata ), Karri ( Eucalyptus diversicolor ) and "Red Tingle" forests ( Eucalyptus jacksonii ). There you will find more than 50 bird - species , including eagles -, snap types, and a colorful season tail -type ( Malurus ). In the other part of the national park a treeless heathland predominates .
