The South Western Highway is a trunk road in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia . It connects the South Coast Highway in Walpole on the south coast of the country with the Albany Highway in Armadale (southeast of the capital Perth ). From Walpole to Bunbury , a port city on the west coast of Western Australia, the South Western Highway is part of National Highway 1 , which leads around the Australian continent, from there to the north it is designated as State Road 20 (S20).

course

The South Western Highway begins in Walpole, where it forms the continuation of the South Coast Highway (R1), which leads to Walpole via Esperance and Albany .

After Walpole, the South Western Highway first passes sparsely populated areas. Along the route there are extensive forests that are home to numerous animal and plant species and are protected by several national parks. The carribrees ( Eucalyptus diversicolor ) which can be found in the Valley of the Giants in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park are particularly well known .

Major towns along the South Western Highway are Manjimup , Bridgetown and Donnybrook, before Bunbury is about 250 km away. Bunbury is the second largest city in Western Australia. The South Western Highway has been going around the city in a wide arc for several years. At the northeast end, the Old Coast Road (R1) branches off, which leads from there directly along the coast to the north and from Bunbury takes the name Highway 1 from the South Western Highway.

The South Western Highway runs from Bunbury on further inland, about 20-30 km from the coast. He follows an old railway line, past the towns of Brunswick Junction , Harvey , Waroona and Pinjarra .

After about 160 km the trunk road reaches the town of Armadale. There it meets the Albany Highway (S30), which is the direct connection between Perth and Albany. Here the South Western Highway has reached its end. Central Perth is 17 miles on the Albany Highway.
