history

The river was named in 1830 by Governor James Stirling after Ernst August I , King of Hanover and Prince of Braunschweig - Lüneburg . In 1813 the king was a passenger on the HMS Brazen , on which Stirling was the captain.

The other names and titles of the king were partly used in the tributaries of the Brunswick River, such as the Ernest River (Eng .: 'Ernst River'), the Augustus River (Eng. 'August River') and the Lunenburgh River ( German: 'Lüneburg River').
