Fitzgerald River National Park in Western Australia is south of Perth and 170 km from Albany . In this national park, which is named after the governor James Fitzgerald , are the Barren Mountains and Eyre Range and the park is traversed by the Fitzgerald River .
The approximately 3300 km² protected area has unique flora and fauna. Point Anne Bay is the best spot in Western Australia to spot the southern right whales in their nursery, as up to 40 whales come to the bay to give birth during the Australian winter. In Point Anne there are two whale watching platforms, the whales come up to 20 meters to these platforms, better than with any boat, because they are only allowed to approach the whales within 200 meters.
62 endemic and other rare plant species were discovered in the national park , for example Drosera prostratoscaposa . Inland there is dry land, which borders the sea with sandy beaches on a long coastline. Three rivers flow into the sea, the Gairdner, Fitzgerald and Hamersley Rivers. The park has Mount Barren Mountains (barren mountains), East Mount Barren at 311 meters, Mid Mount Barren at 451 meters, and West Mount Barren at 340 meters, which are the highest peaks in the rugged Barren Mountain Range. The park can be reached from the west via Bremer Bay and from the east via Hopetoun .
The best starting point to explore the impressive nature and for whale watching is the Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat, which is located in the middle of the park on the western side, there are botanical hiking trails and it is only 30 km away from Point Anne (whale watching and one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia).
The interior of the national park can only be hiked. As the root rot, the phytophthora , spreads in the park, it is important to observe the precautionary measures and to wash the shoes thoroughly to limit the spread.
