The 1,997 km² Millstream Chichester National Park is located in the Pilbara region in Western Australia . It is located about 150 km south of Roebourne .

The park consists of the old Millstream Farm near Millstream Creek , one of the few watercourses in the area that does not dry up, and the Chichester Range , a rugged mountain range with many canyons and water holes.

history

The area has been inhabited by the Yinjibarndi Aboriginal tribe for a long time . Ngarrari , as they call the area around Millstream Creek, was an important cultural meeting place and gathering place. Millstream was named in 1861 by the explorer Francis Thomas Gregory , who described the area as excellent pastureland. The first farm was founded four years later. In its heyday it had a size of over 400,000 hectares and looked after 55,000 sheep. Today, the national park's visitor center is located in the farmhouse built in 1919. The park originally consisted of two separate areas, which were merged in 1982.

The park can be reached via the connecting road from Roebourne to Wittenom . There are three basic campsites at Crossing Pool, Deep Reach Pool, and Snake Creek. The visitor center is in close proximity to Millstream Creek and the Fortecue River. There are a number of groundwater-fed basins that carry water all year round. They are lined with various kinds of palm trees and paperbarks, a kind of Melaleuca . Plant species that are more typical of the tropical north of Australia also thrive here. The millstream palm is particularly interesting with its greyish green leaves and soft bark.

Different species of kangaroo live in the park, mainly in the flat areas the red giant kangaroo . The black flying fox and a variety of bird species can be found near the water. 14 types of dragonflies and dragonflies were counted.
