The Mount Buninyong is a volcanic crater in Victoria in Australia , located 3 km east of the town of Buninyong and 80 km west of Melbourne is. The crater, which is located not far from Mount Warrenheip , is one of 400 volcanoes in the Newer Volcanics Province and one of the tallest cinder cones in Victoria.

geology

The mountain in the central highlands of the Newer Volcanics Province rises 745  m above sea level and more than 245 m above the surrounding terrain. It was created by two eruptions: The first created a crater in the northwest of the main crater with a height of about 600  m when the lava flowed in a southeast direction to Clarendon . The second eruption created the crater in its present form; the emerging lava flowed in the direction of Buninyong, and there were other smaller lava outflows.

The Mount Buninyong has a well-developed central crater that is breached on the northwest side and has not been used as a quarry. It is one of the few volcanic craters in Australia whose original vegetation has been preserved.

The Mount Buninyoung essentially consists of lava and volcanic agglomerate . The lava contains olivine-rich xenolites and clinopyroxene megacrystals.

history

In the area of the mountain that lived Aborigines of Wathaurong . In 1837, seven European immigrants climbed Mount Buningyoung for the first time . In 1866 the Mt Buninyong Reserve was established with 90 hectares. Since 1926 a road has led to the top of the mountain.

Others

The mountain is an important drinking water reserve, as the groundwater from the surrounding mountains collects there and flows into springs at the foot of the mountain. As the mountain is often visited by day trippers because of its good views, there are three viewpoints with sun protection, toilets and barbecue areas. There are also telecommunications systems on the mountain. Since the mountain is registered as a natural monument in the list of Australian monuments, a warning was given against further expansion on the mountain, as otherwise it could be deleted from the list.
