For the highest peaks on the Australian continent outside the country of Australia, see the list of mountains or peaks in Oceania .

Highest elevations in each state and territory

The highest peaks on the Australian mainland are in the Australian Alps , in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales and in the south-west bordering Victorian Alps in the state of Victoria . Only in the Snowy Mountains do the peaks reach heights of over 2000 meters, the highest is Mount Kosciuszko with a height of 2228 meters.

The highest mountains on Australian territory are on the outskirts, on the Heard and McDonald Islands and in the Australian Antarctic Territory . The Mawson Peak on the island Heard is 2,745 meters high and the highest point of the volcano Big Ben , almost the entire island is covered. In addition to Mawson Peak, there are other named secondary peaks on the volcano, which are at an altitude of over 2000 meters. In the east of the Australian Antarctic Territory, Mount McClintock is 3490 meters high, and Mount Menzies is 3355 meters high in the west . The Dome Argus is over 4000 meters high, but ice domes are not officially listed as mountains.

Two thousand meter peaks on the Australian mainland

The 25 peaks of over 2000 meters on mainland Australia are all located in the state of New South Wales in southeastern Australia and in the Snowy Mountains . The area of the Snowy Mountains around Mount Kosciuszko is called the Main Range ; all two-thousand- meter peaks are located here except for Gungartan , Mount Jagungal and Kerries Ridge, a few kilometers to the northeast . All of the peaks are easy to climb and many do not require climbing. The first ascent of the highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko , happened in February 1840 by Paul Edmund de Strzelecki . Except for the Big Ben volcano and Antarctica, all other mountains outside the mainland are lower than 2000 meters.
