Mount Larrabee is a mountain in the Skagit Range about 1.4 mi (2.3 km) south of the border between Canada and the United States in the North Cascades in Whatcom County , Washington state . It is located immediately southeast of the American Border Peak in the Mount Baker Wilderness , which is part of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and spreads near the North Cascades National Park . The mountain is known for its reddish color, which is attributed to the oxidation of iron in the rock. The rock consists of reddish embedded and folded phyllites and green schists . Originally the mountain was called Red Mountain. The name was changed in 1951 in honor of Charles F. Larrabee by the prominent Larrabee family of Bellingham .

Mount Larrabee can be seen from Washington State Route 542 ("Mt. Baker Highway") near Heather Meadows and Artist Point, but also from locations in the Fraser River Valley in Canada. On the east ridge of the Larrabee there is a series of sharp spikes called The Pleiades. The north ridge leads over to the American Border Peak. The rainfall runoff on the west side of the mountain drains into Tomyhoi Lake and Tomyhoi Creek, while the east side of the mountain drains into Silesia Creek. An (officially) unnamed glacier , commonly known as the Larrabee Glacier, lies below the steep north face. Downhill from the glacier is the Boundary Red Mountain Mine , where gold was found in the early 20th century. The Gargett Mine was on the southwest slope, north of High Pass, but was abandoned due to poor gold quality.

The summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Tomyhoi Peak, American Border Peak, Slesse Mountain , Mount Challenger, the Picket Range , Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker . Normal access is via Twin Lakes Road and the High Pass Trail. The Winchester Mountain Lookout is conveniently located in the neighborhood to photograph the Larrabee and find shelter under one roof where you can also stay overnight.
