Participants of the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) mapped him in collaboration with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey on a sled excursion. Expedition leader Finn Ronne named him after Richard Upjohn Light (1902-1994), then President of the American Geographical Society .
