The Mount Pelion East is a mountain in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located on the eastern edge of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park and, at 1,446 m, is the sixteenth highest peak in Tasmania, a little higher than the better-known Frenchmans Cap . Unlike Mount Pelion West , Mount Pelion East is not a massive mountain, but rather has the shape of a pointed tower, which can be traced back to massive glacial erosion thousands of years ago.

location

The network coordinates in the UTM coordinate system are 225655 UTM Zone 55S and a high-resolution topographic map (1: 25,000) is available from Tasmap . To the west is Mount Pelion West, to the north is Lake Ayr , to the east is Curate Bluff , part of the Cathedral Mountain Range and to the south is Mount Massif . The mountain consists of diabase and the lower slopes are covered with low scrub (Scoparia). The Overland Track runs about a kilometer from the summit ; the branch is roughly in the middle between the Pelion Hut and the Kia Ora Hut .

Access

The mountain can mainly be reached during the main season (November – April) via the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain . During this time, the use of the hiking trail is only permitted from north to south, must be booked and is chargeable. In the off-season, access from the south, from Lake St. Clair , is also possible. Another access option is the combination of the Arm River Track and the Innes Track , which runs past Lake Ayr and meets the Overland Track in the Pelion Plains .

Ascent

This mountain can be climbed from the Overland Track, which runs through the Pelion Gap (1,126 m).
