history

Many historians from Riverside agree that the original name of Mount Rubidoux was Pachappa. Perhaps one of the first owners of the Rancho Jurupa transferred the name to another, smaller elevation in order to enlarge the area of the Rancho. If this assumption is correct, the area of the Rancho Jurupa would have increased significantly as a result of this measure and covered the entire area of today's downtown Riverside. Another possibility is that the US government renamed the two surveys in order to restore old land grants.

Mount Rubidoux owes its current name to the European settler Louis Rubidoux, who bought Benjamin Davis Wilson , the second elected mayor of Los Angeles , part of Rancho Jurupa and named it Rancho Rubidoux .

World Peace Bridge on Mount Rubidoux

Loring jointly formed the Huntington Park Association and bought the land with the intention of building a road to the top and turning the mountain into a park, which should benefit riverside. the resulting Huntington Park was later renamed Frank A. Miller Mount Rubidoux Memorial Park after his heirs to the city in 1955 made the area available. On December 13, 1925, the Peace Memorial Testimonial Peace Tower on Mount Frank Augustus Miller was dedicated. The bridge next to it is modeled on the Alcántara Bridge in Spain .

Numerous improvements, including the new road, were completed in February 1907. The first memorial on Mount Rubidoux was a cross erected on April 26, 1907 in memory of the Franciscan and founder of San Francisco , Junípero Serra , in memory of his travels in the valley and stays at Rancho Jurupa.

Easter Sunrise Service

In April 1909, Jacob Riis , a friend of US President Theodore Roosevelt in Riverside to visit and suggested to celebrate a Mass on Easter morning at the summit of Mount Rubidoux. As a result, the first open-air ecumenical service in the United States was held here on Easter morning .

In 1912 there were already around 3,000 people present when Henry van Dyke recited his poem God of the Open Air in the service, and in the following years more and more people attended the service. In 1918, the construction of an amphitheater with 10,000 seats was considered, but these plans never came to fruition.

The event also achieved national and international fame through the participation of numerous celebrities such as the soprano Marcella Craft .
