Muddy Kill is a short tributary of the Wallkill River that runs its entire length within the Town of Montgomery in Orange County , New York .

It rises in a small unnamed lake about 1.7 km west of Walden and first flows southwest, before taking a roughly southerly direction and then emptying into the Wallkill River. Its mouth is just above the Village of Montgomery . The Muddy Kill drains the low Comfort Hills to the west.

Its course lies largely in a former forest area that was cleared for the, whereby some areas are currently fallow and are no longer used for agriculture . Near the mouth of the water flows through a 41-hectare horse breeding, which is owned by the Town now and then crossed by a culvert , the New York State Route 17K .

The name is an English interpretation of the name Modder Kill , as the flowing water was called by the early Dutch settlers . The fertile land in the valley of the stream attracted many early settlers. The houses of some of them still stand today, including those of Abraham Dickerson , Jacob Bookstaver , Moses Mold and Wilhelm Schmitt . The area is equally interesting for land developers looking to sell real estate, on the one hand, and the Open Space Institute, on the other hand, whose intention is to reduce the ecological impact on the Wallkill River catchment area . In 2005 the town council participated in the permanent right to use the 91 hectare Zylstra Farm, one of the largest land holdings on Modder Creek.

Due to the lack of significant forest areas, the watercourse can swell quickly in heavy rain . After a Nor'easter in April 2007, the floods rose so high that State Route 17K west of Montgomery had to be closed for two days.
