Muhammad I. ( Arabic محمد بن عبد الرحمن, DMG Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥman , Spanish Mohamed I de Córdoba , * 823 ; †  886 ) was the fifth emir of Córdoba (852–886).

Life

In 852 Muhammad I succeeded his father Abd ar-Rahman II in the Emirate of Cordoba . First of all, between 851 and 859 there was strong tension with the Mozarabs when they were incited to martyrdom by Christian ascetics. Some Christians publicly vilified Islam and the prophet Mohammed , who were punished with death by the Umayyad criminal justice system. After 45 “ Martyrs of Cordoba“Having found death, Muhammad I had intentional martyrdom condemned by a Christian synod, which meant that Christian attacks against Islam also subsided and the relationship between Christians and Muslims was no longer burdened.

Then in 862 Muhammad succeeded in subjugating the margravate of Saragossa again before it fell again from the Umayyads in 866 . After the margravates of Toledo (852) and Mérida (868) declared their independence, the power of Muhammad I was considerably restricted. Alfons III of Asturias took advantage of this to expand its empire further south. When Alfonso allied himself with the Muladí rebels Ibn Marwan and Saʿdūn as-Surunbāqī , Muhammad I had to make peace with Asturias in 883. The crisis in the emirate reached its peak for the time being when the revolt of Umar ibn Hafsun broke out in Bobastro near Málaga in 884 and spread rapidly in southern Andalusia .

Among the most important Muslim legal scholars during his reign were Muhammad ibn Yūsuf ibn Matrūh (d. 884) and Baqī ibn Machlad . Muhammad I died in 886. He was succeeded by his son al-Mundhir (886-888).
