Muldain is a fraction of the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . The village is made up of the two districts Muldain and Dal. The three neighboring tribal fractions Lain , Muldain and Zorten are collectively referred to as Obervaz . They lie on a terrace on the southern slope of the Crap la Pala above the deeply cut gorge of the Albula .

history

Muldain is mentioned in the Tellotestament as early as 765 AD . There is a speech by Justinianus Miles Vico Moldene, who, together with other personalities, appears as a co-signer of the will of Chur Bishop Tello . In this context, Father Iso Müller suggested that Muldain and not Zorten could have been the original capital of Obervaz. The 13-15 Muldain court, mentioned in the 17th century, belonged to the knightly family von Muldain , also called Muldein or Muldis. The von Muldain administered the goods of the Chur cathedral chapter in Tiefencastel and Stugl .

Attractions

The church of St. Johannes Baptista , first mentioned in 1508, was rebuilt in the baroque style in 1673–77 and restored in 1990. The stucco works by Giovanni and Giulio Broggio. Two oil paintings can be seen in the choir and in the nave. One shows the sermon of John the Baptist, the other is an iconographically rare representation of the three biblical sacrifices, provided with the Schauenstein coat of arms. The bird sermon of St. Francis of Assisi and the fish sermon of St. Anthony of Padua can be seen on the painted entrance roof.

The Junkerhaus is the historically most important house in the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz. It is located next to the Johannes Baptista church. It was built in 1698 by the Bishop Remigius de Florin. After the de Florin died out, the house came into the possession of the de Bergamin family. Today the Junkerhaus serves as a residence, and in the past also as a restaurant.

Muldain is the starting point for the hike through the Schin Gorge to Thusis . The old Schin-Weg (also Schynweg) was an important traffic connection. The wide path was carved into the rock high above the gorge and offers a deep view of the Albula.
