The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is a metropolitan area in India that consists of Mumbai on the island of Salsette and its satellite cities on the Maharashtra coast . The region has an area of 4,355 km² and, with 20,748,395 inhabitants (2011), is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. In addition to the core city of Mumbai with over 12 million inhabitants, there are 4 other megacities in the region with Navi Mumbai , Thane , Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli . The Mumbai metropolitan area, along with the adjacent Pune metropolitan area and the Nashik metropolitan area , make up the Mumbai megaregion, also known as the Mumbai Megalopolis and the Golden Triangle of Maharashtra, which accounts for a significant part of the country's industrial production. The region plays an increasingly important role in the global economy, but at the same time has to contend with problems such as environmental pollution, overpopulation, slum formation and traffic chaos.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority , which is subordinate to the federal government of Maharashtra, has been responsible for the development of the metropolitan region since 1975 . This commission is intended to promote economic integration and development and was instrumental in projects such as the construction of Navi Mumbai, which is now the most populous planned city in the world. Projects that will be realized include a. an extension of the subway system , an express train line from Mumbai to Ahmedabad , several industrial parks, a motorway from Mumbai to Pune and an international airport in Navi Mumbai.

In 2019 it was decided to expand the metropolitan region, increasing the area of the region by around 50% to 6,355 km².
