The Muppberg - not to be confused with the nearby district called Mupperg of the municipality of Föritztal - is 515.7  m above sea level. NHN higher, between Neustadt bei Coburg , Sonneberg and Heubisch , Zeugenberg . On January 1, 1975, the 204 hectare, community-free forest district of Muppberg (Neustadter Forest) was incorporated into Neustadt from the Coburg domain assets. On the summit is the Arnoldhütte, a refuge named after Max Oscar Arnold , and next to it the Prinzregententurm .

Prince Regent Tower

The Muppberg is very well developed through many hiking trails. On the initiative of Max Oscar Arnold, the Neustadt Beautification Association built the 28-meter-high observation tower . The construction costs of 12,500 marks were paid for through collections and donations. Namesake of inaugurated on June 4, 1905 the tower is Ernst II. Zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg , who after the death of his father Duke Alfred on 30 July 1900 to 18 July 1905, the government business in the duchies of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for more underage Carl Eduard led. The round tower made of sandstone in Art Nouveau forms has a base level with reliefs by the sculptor Emil Bunzel based on models by Max Derra, depicting the Prince Regent Ernst zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg on the west side, Duke Ernst II on the east side, Duke Alfred on the north side and the Portraying Duke Carl Eduard on the south side. The construction work was carried out by the master mason Bernhard Bosecker. The design came from his son Julius Bosecker.

Arnoldhütte

In 1926 the Neustadt Beautification Association had a refuge built on the Muppberg. The log cabin cost 2,600 marks and was inaugurated on May 16, 1926. It has been officially called Arnoldhütte since 1932. After the expansion, the year-round management followed.

Ottilien Chapel

The "Ottilienkapelle", which was probably founded after 1071, used to stand on the Muppberg. There is indirect evidence for the existence of the chapel from 1343. In the 16th century the chapel was a place of pilgrimage. After the introduction of the Reformation , the pilgrimage church was demolished in 1533.

Play

The playwright Tankred Dorst uses the name of a distant South American mountain symbolically for the Muppberg in his play Auf dem Chimborazo because of the inner-German border and the characters involved.
