List of glaciers in Alaska

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Alaska , which during the last great ice age at the end of the Pleistocene was only under a closed ice cover in the coastal mountains and the Brooks range , there are around 100,000 glaciers , of which around 650 have a name. They are located in a wide variety of geographical regions, from the peaks of the mountains to the coast of the Pacific . Five percent of the area of the state, around 85,000 km² (roughly the area of Austria ), is covered by ice. With the exception of a few glaciers that flow into the sea, almost all glaciers in Alaska recede. Since the early 1980s, glacier retreat has been increasing at an increasing rate.
