Murray Westgate

Murray Westgate (born April 16, 1918 in Regina , Saskatchewan , † August 27, 2018 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Canadian actor .

Life

Prior to his acting career, Westgate served as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II . After the war, he moved to Vancouver to gain his first acting experience at the Everyman Theater there. He also worked on radio plays on CBC Radio.

In 1952 Westgate made his first appearance as an advertising character for the gas station chain Esso on the sports program Hockey Night in Canada . He became known nationwide for his embodiment of a tank attendant. Westgate appeared in this role until 1968 and again in 1991.

Westgate received his first roles in films and television series through his fame as a commercial character. In the following years he was seen in series such as Adventure in Rainbow Land , Police Doctor Simon Lark and Heirs of the Curse and in 1981 in a supporting role as a gatekeeper in the horror film From Into Eternity . Westgate had one of his most famous film appearances in 1991 as George Kellum in the horror film Scanners II . In the same year he ended his career as an actor.

Murray Westgate was married to actress Alice Hill until her death in 1983. The couple had a daughter together. He last lived in Toronto, where he died in August 2018, a good four months after his 100th birthday.
