Musken ( Lule Måsske ) is a town in the Norwegian municipality Hamarøy , located in the province ( Fylke ) Nordland .

geography

Musken is located in the Ofoten region halfway between the long and narrow Hellmofjord , an arm of the Tysfjord . The Måskejåhkå river flows into the fjord at Musken. The village is not far from Hellmobotn at the head of Hellmofjord, where mainland Norway is narrowest: only 6 km between the sea and Sweden . The postal address is 8274 Musken . Musken is 163 meters above sea level.

Musken is not connected to the road network and can only be reached by boat. The Råggejávrrerájgge , the deepest cave in Northern Europe, is located east of Musken. The cave is 580 m deep.

history

The village is traditionally a settlement area for lule seeds. Until the end of 2019, Musken belonged to the former municipality of Tysfjord . These were split up as part of the state- wide municipal reform and Musken was subsequently transferred to the municipality of Hamarøy.

The local school had only three students left in 2009 before it closed.

Surname

The Norwegian name of the place is derived from the Lule Sami name, which stands for "round valley surrounded by steep mountains".
