Ofoten is a historic landscape in northern Norway , which today includes the northern mainland part of Fylkes Nordland around the Ofotfjord with the greater Narvik area.

Ofoten is located in the northeastern part of Nordland, along the Ofotfjord and its branches. The area includes the municipalities of Narvik, Evenes , Tjeldsund , Lødingen and Hamarøy , with larger parts of Hamarøy lying outside the landscape area.

The area is characterized by high elevations, about 43 percent of the area is above a height of 600  moh. In the east are the highest elevations, including the Storsteinfjellet ( Sami : Sealggajiekŋa ) with a height of 1893.3  moh. in Narvik Municipality.

The population lives mainly in the settlements at Ofotfjord and de Vestfjord. With 14,148 inhabitants (as of 2019) Narvik is the most populous city in Ofoten. Other larger so-called Tettsteder are Lødingen, Bjerkvik, Kjøpsvik and Ballangen.

From 1837 the municipality of Ofoten existed, which was divided into the municipalities of Evenes and Ankenes in 1884 .

economy

Agriculture is practiced in the flat areas near the shore, fishing is of rather minor importance for the area. There are several larger power plants , the largest being the Skjomen power plant.

The Ofotbanen runs through Ofoten for 43 kilometers through Norway until it reaches the Norwegian-Swedish border and continues there into Kiruna , Sweden . Large quantities of ore from Kiruna are transported on the railway line . On the south side of the Ofjotfjord there is a section of European route 6 (E6), which crosses European route 10 north of Narvik . Harstad / Narvik Airport is located in Evenes .
