history

Peter Feile (1899–1972) took part in the 1927 Werkbund exhibition “The Apartment” with the “ Siedlung am Weißenhof ” in Stuttgart. In his hometown of Würzburg he was able to design the semi-detached house at Keesburgstrasse 29 / 29a in 1928 . The property was made available by his future father-in-law. The presentation of this house met with great interest in Würzburg and received positive reviews in the local press and in specialist magazines.

Feile then decided to acquire an area of around 20,000 m² in the Frauenland district from the city of Würzburg and designed a settlement with 31 “type houses” in the New Building style on plots of around 400 m². The city approved only 22 houses in November 1929, which should be completed by 1935. Feiles Baugesellschaft Lerchenhain mbH built the three model houses by 1930. The public presentation in September 1930 was successful, but there was no interest in buying, so that Feile could not realize any of his other designs for the Lerchenhain.

On the basis of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of October 1, 1973, the three “white houses” Feiles were entered in the Bavarian Monument List as examples of the New Objectivity .

Buildings

The three model houses are each three-story, but have different sizes. What they have in common is the style that was new at the time, which completely broke with conventional construction due to the distinctive flat roof. The villas have simple cubic shapes in various designs. The wall surfaces are smooth and appear due to their white coloring. The window is developed from the inside out. Hollow blocks of pumice were used as building material , the floorboards are also made of pumice. Concrete is used for the solid ceilings with reinforced concrete beams.
