The museum was founded in 2005 by decision of the Polish Minister of Culture. The Ministry of Culture and the City of Warsaw are equally responsible for the museum. Joanna Mytkowska is the founding director. Exhibitions of Polish and international art from the 20th and 21st centuries have been held since 2007 in a temporary exhibition space at 3 ulica Pańska at the corner of ulica Emilii Plater , on the western edge of the Defiladenplatz ( plac Defilad ). The pavilion of the former Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin has served as an alternative quarter for the former furniture store "Dom Meblowy Emilia", which was demolished in winter 2016/2017 . This functional building was built in the autumn of 2016 on the  Vistula  in the vicinity of the  Copernicus Science Center  as the "Muzeum nad Wisłą". Now painted white on the outside, the museum's first exhibition opened at this location on March 25, 2017.

In 2007, an international architectural competition was held, which Christian Kerez's CCAW architectural office won with a minimalist design. Kerez co-designed the Liechtenstein Art Museum, which opened in 2000 . Daniel Libeskind was part of the jury . The plan for the new building of the Museum of Modern Art based on the design by Kerez provided for a usable area of 30,000 square meters. The L-shaped building should cost EUR 91 million. In May 2012 it became known that the Warsaw City Planning Department had withdrawn from the contract with the CCAW Polska architectural firm. In a new, two-stage competition from 2013 to 2014, a design by the New York architecture firm Thomas Phifer and Partners was selected instead , which provides for a usable area of only 20,000 square meters. The building has been under construction since April 2019 on the north side of the parade square near the intersection of Marszałkowska and Świętokrzyska. The opening is planned for December 2022.
