My kind of town
My Kind of Town is a song by Jimmy Van Heusen (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) that was released in 1964.
Van Heusen and Cahn wrote "My Kind of Town" for the film Sieben gegen Chicago (Original title: Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964), director: Gordon Douglas ), with Frank Sinatra , Dean Martin , Sammy Davis junior , Bing Crosby and Peter Falk in the leading roles. The songwriter duo also contributed a number of other songs such as I Like to Lead When I Dance and Style .
The song received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1965 . Accompanied by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Sinatra sang My Kind of Town in the film as a tribute to his friend, Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana. Sinatra took the song into his repertoire in the following years and released it on several of his LPs, such as A Man and His Music (1965) or Sinatra at the Sands (1966).
The lyrics praise the city of Chicago and repeat the phrase My Kind of Town several times , as if to say My kind of town, Chicago is . The first lines of the song are:
- Now this could only happen to a guy like me
- And only happen in a town like this
- So may I say to each of you most gratef'lly
- As I throw each one of you a kiss.
Frank Sinatra released the song on his Reprise label, coupled with his hit song Strangers in the Night (R-23052) and That's Life (REP-0720). Cover versions of My Kind of Town took off in the 1960s a. a. Jack Jones , Peter Duchin , Frankie Randall with the Marty Paich Orchestra, Al Saxon , Julie London , Count Basie , Dukes of Dixieland , Jackie Gleason and Larry Elgart . In later years Ruby Braff , Allan Vaché , Ray Anthony , Ralph Sharon , Biréli Lagrène and Harry Allen also interpreted the song.
