My Wild Irish Rose is a song from the musical A Romance of Athlone, which premiered in 1899 . It was composed by Chauncey Olcott . He also wrote the lyrics. The song was sung for the first time by Dick Ronyane. Since its debut, the song has been interpreted by numerous artists of different musical styles. He was also the soundtrack in numerous films and TV series.

Chauncey Olcott, the song's composer and lyricist, was born on July 21, 1858 in Buffalo , New York . In addition to being a songwriter, Olcott was also a successful stage actor and singer. Between 1894 and 1920 he wrote the scores for more than twenty musicals with an Irish touch, including Minstrel of Clare (1896), Sweet Inniscara (1897), A Romance of Athlone (1899), Garret O'Magh (1901) and Old Limerick Town (1902).
The song My Wild Irish Rose was composed for the musical A Romance Of Athlone and became Olcott's most famous song. Other well-known songs by the composer are Mother Machree from the musical Barry of Ballymore (1910) and When Irish Eyes Are Smiling from the musical The Isle o 'Dreams (1913).
The musical A Romance of Athlone premiered on January 9, 1899 at Fourteenth Street Theater in New York City . Albert Campbell recorded the song on March 22, 1899 and released it as a single that same year.
The life story of Chauncey Olcott was told in the 1947 film My Wild Irish Rose , with Dennis Morgan in the role of Olcott. The script of the film is based on the biography Song in His Heart (1939) by Rita Olcott, the artist's wife.
