Mycobacterium smegmatis is a bacterium from the group of mycobacteria . They are rod-shaped bacteria with a length of 3 to 5 µm. It is part of the normal flora of the smegma in the human genital area , both in the area of the female vulva and the clitoral hood , Praeputium clitoridis , as well as in the man under the Praeputium penis .

It was also found frequently in soil samples. It is only in rare cases pathogenic and is one of the so - called non - tubercular mycobacteria (MOTT). Mycobacterium smegmatis is one of the fast-growing mycobacteria that form easily visible colonies on agar-containing culture media within a week . This is why it is also considered a model organism for mycobacteria and is often used in laboratories for metabolic studies. The electron microscopic characterization was carried out using cryo-electron microscopy .

The genome was sequenced by the J. Craig Venter Institute . The mycolic acids , as well as other types of Mycobacterium , were analyzed.

Systematics
