from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Myer Mike Kessler , also Myer Michael Kessler (* 1917 in Odessa , † August 14, 1997 in Belmont , Massachusetts ) was an American physicist and information scientist.

Life

Myer Kessler studied biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and then physics at Duke University in Durham , where he received his doctorate in 1948 with a thesis on microwave spectroscopy . In 1954 he went to MIT, where he initially worked at the Lincoln Laboratory and later in the library sector until his retirement in 1976. In 1962 he became director of the MIT Technical Information Project . The aim of this project was to collect important research policy information from the statistical analysis of bibliographic databases when mainframe computers began to be used in the early 1960sto win. Kessler was one of the pioneers in this field, and he published important articles on quantitative information analysis. His publication from 1963 on the method of bibliographic coupling is one of the most cited publications in the field of bibliometrics .

Kessler was married to the Russian-born Canadian-American pianist, music teacher and composer Minuetta Kessler (née Shumiatcher) (1914–2002). Their graves are in a Jewish cemetery in Sharon, Massachusetts, the Sharon Memorial Park.
