Myleus (from Greek mylax, mylakos = millstone) is a genus of large, disc-shaped tetra from South America . They occur in tropical South America, east of the Andes from the Guyanas over the Amazon to the Río de la Plata . The freshwater fish feed mainly on plants, some species also on fruits.
features
Myleus - species are 15 to 60 centimeters long. Your body is high back and heavily compressed on the sides. Your scales are small. They differ from the genus Metynnis by their longer dorsal fin, supported by 21 to 31 fin rays, and the short adipose fin . The first ray of the dorsal fin is spiky, the distance between the dorsal fin and adipose fin is always greater than the length of the adipose fin. In addition, the Myleus species have a distinct gender dimorphism , which has led to males and females being described as different species. The males have a double-lobed anal fin , the females have a sickle-shaped finish, and at spawning time they have dark red spots on the sides of their bodies.
