Myriam Marquez

Myriam Márquez (* around 1955 in Havana ) is an American journalist . She is currently the editor-in-chief of the Spanish-language daily El Nuevo Herald .

Myriam Márquez was born in the Cuban capital Havana as the daughter of a taxi driver and a teacher. After the victory of the Cuban Revolution , the family fled to the USA in 1959 and settled in South Florida . Marquez was then four years old.

She grew up bilingual in Miami and began studying at Miami Dade College . She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in journalism with a minor in political science .

Marquez began her journalistic career at United Press International in Washington, DC , where she covered Congress . From 1987 to 2005, Márquez worked for the Orlando Sentinel as a columnist and member of the editorial team. Her main themes were education, social affairs and the environment.

She joined the Miami Herald in October 2005, writing about the Latin American and Caribbean communities of South Florida. In 2007 she became assistant director for the Miami section of the newspaper and in 2008 she became a columnist for that section. From June 2009 she was responsible for the entire opinion section of the newspaper, both in print and online.

In October 2013, Myriam Márquez was appointed to succeed the outgoing editor-in-chief of sister newspaper El Nuevo Herald , Manny García .

Myriam Marquez is married to local reporter Tony Pipitone and has two grown sons.
