Myrkgrav ( no ., Grave dark ') is a folk and Viking Metal project to the front man and multiinstrumentalist Lars Jensen from the Norwegian place Åsa ( Ringerike ). The debut album was released on the German label Det Germanske Folket. The successor is currently being worked on.

Band history

Myrkgrav was founded by Lars Jensen in early 2003 as a solo project. A year later he published the demo Fra Fjellheimen Kaller , which he sent to various labels, whereupon there was finally a collaboration with the German label Det Germanske Folket. After numerous problems, the debut album Trollskau, Skrømt og Kølabrenning was recorded in the summer of 2006 and released on October 27 of the same year. Since then, Jensen has been working on the follow-up album Forteljinger frå Finnefjerdingen , on which the folk influences are to be expanded even further. Due to the disappointing collaboration with DGF, Myrkgrav parted with the label and asked not to order there.

The split single Myrkgrav / Voluspaa was released on April 29, 2011 on the label Einheit Produktionen with a circulation of 500 copies as a 7 " record and contains one song each from the two bands.

In November 2011 Jensen announced that he would hold a listening session at the Ragnarök Festival 2012, during which the upcoming studio album Forteljinger frå Finnefjerdingen would be presented in full and the last 50 copies of Trollskau, Skrømt og Kølabrenning were also sold.

style

music

At first the style of music was focused on pure black metal . During the songwriting for the demo, however, Jensen wanted to bring more folk elements into his music, which is why the music can be described as a mixture of folk and black metal, which is similar to Viking metal . He himself describes the style as Folcloric Extreme Metal . Comparisons of his music are e.g. B. pulled with Falkenbach , Enslaved , Månegarm , Windir , Einherjer , Cor Scorpii , Mistur and Ulfhednar . Metal hammer author Gunnar Sauermann described the music on the debut album as being equipped with “majestic melodies, hymn song structures, desolate croaks, and sublime clear chants”.

Texts

According to Jensen's own statements, his texts are based on old stories, fairy tales and legends from the Ringerike Province, Jensen's homeland, mainly from the 17th to the end of the 19th century. They are written in a local dialect of Norwegian . Jensen came up with the idea for these topics quite soon, since he had been interested in old stories from his homeland since his youth and wanted to "dust them off and give them new life" by adapting them to his music.
