The National Route 18 (in short N18 ) is a South African national road , which in Warrenton starts and up to Ramatlabama at the border between South Africa and Botswana runs. The N18 is sometimes still listed as the R49 in South Africa, the previous name for most of this national road.

Route

The N18 runs north from the center in Warrenton, where the N12, coming from the south, turns north-east. In the further course of the N18 they are accompanied by a parallel railway line that follows this national road more or less closely and crosses the state border to Botswana in the same place as it .

On the first sections to Warrenton, the N18 only passes small towns such as Jan Kempdorp , Hartswater , Pudimoe , De Beers and Tierkloof and crosses the provincial border between Northern Cape and North West . Shortly after the township of Huhudi , it reaches Vryburg . The N14 crosses here . Now facing northeast, the N18 connects smaller settlements such as Devonlea , Stella , Setlagole before reaching the city of Mahikeng (Mafikeng). Only a few regional roads lead to this section.

In Mahikeng the regional roads R27 and R503 branch off in an easterly direction, while another regional road turns westwards, following the border between South Africa and Botswana, creating a connection to the nearby border crossing at Makgobistad and even more distant regional border crossings.

From Mahikeng in a northerly direction, the N18 passes the place Mmabatho and reaches the border crossing to Botswana in Ramatlabama. From this point the Botswana trunk road A1 continues to Lobatse and Gaborone .

Route expansion

In all sections the carriageway is single-lane with asphalt pavement, on a few kilometers to Warrenton with paved verge, otherwise with graveled edge areas. So far there are no toll roads on the N18.
