The National Route 5 (short- N5 ) is a South African national road , which in Harri Smith starting until after Winburg runs.

Route

The N5 is a national road that does not touch any urban or industrial conurbations . It connects two main toll roads in South Africa north of Lesotho , the N3 and the N1 .

From Harrismith the N3 runs on the northern foothills of the Drakensberg through sparsely populated area. In doing so, it takes on the traffic of converging regional roads such as the R74, R57 and R711. In Bethlehem , the R26 crosses and branches off the R76. There is also a railway junction in this city.

Further to the west, it passes the expiring mountain ranges of the Witteberge and the towns of Paul Roux and Senekal . In the latter small town, the N5 crosses a railway line and a few kilometers later the R70 branches off in a north-westerly direction towards Welkom . The N5 now turns further in a south-westerly direction and reaches its other end point in Winburg.

Route expansion

In all sections, the road is paved with asphalt and has two lanes. For most of its course, it is flanked on both sides by a paved edge strip that is only graveled in a few sections.

There are currently no toll booths on the N5 .
