Senekal is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is located in the municipality of Setsoto in the district Thabo Mofutsanyana .

geography

In 2011 Senekal had 3466 inhabitants. The neighboring township of Matwabeng had 22,076 inhabitants. The city lies on the national road N5 , which leads from Winburg north around Lesotho to Harrismith .

Senekal is located in the Highveld , a mostly flat plateau with some mesas of sandstone . The Sand River flows through Senekal , a tributary of the Vet River , which in turn flows into the Vaal .

history

Senekal was built on the site of Farm De Put from 1877 . It was named after General Frederik Petrus Senekal, who died under Moshoeshoe I in the Seqiti War of the Boers against the Basotho in 1865 . On May 29, 1900 the "Battle of Biddulphsberg" took place as part of the Second Boer War near Senekal, in which 400 Boers defeated 4,000 British. In 1938 a forerunner of the Boer Bund Ossewabrandwag was founded on Biddulphsberg , which sided with the Germans in World War II. Until the territorial reform in the 1990s, Senekal belonged to the Winburg district.

Economy and Transport

The main line of business is agriculture in the agrarian area of ​​Senekal. The national road N5, which runs through Senekal, is part of the connection between the major cities of Bloemfontein and Durban . Senekal is located on the Arlington - Marquard railway line , which is now only operated in freight traffic as planned.

Attractions

The church, which belongs to the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa , was built in 1896. It is made of sandstone and is surrounded by a wall containing petrified tree trunks that are around 250 million years old. The wall is classified as a national monument.
