The Bombardier ALP-45DP is a two-power locomotive manufactured by Bombardier Transportation . The customers are New Jersey Transit (NJT) in the USA and Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) in Montreal ( Canada ). ALP-45DP stands for A merican L ocomotive P assenger 4 (axles / axes) 5 (MVA / transformer output) D ual P ower.

history

The NJT needed a locomotive that could move commuter trains from the non-electrified network of New Jersey 's suburbs to Pennsylvania Station . Because the tunnel under the Hudson River can only be used by electric vehicles, the locomotive must have a full-fledged electric drive as well as a diesel drive with power supply from the catenary.

The AMT followed the order from NJT because the Mont-Royal tunnel can also only be used by electric vehicles, but the route network is not electrified except for the line to Deux-Montagnes .

In January 2018, NJT exercised an option for 17 additional locomotives that comply with the stricter Tier 4 exhaust gas limits of the EPA and are therefore environmentally friendly than the previous series.

Constructive features

The challenge in building the locomotive was to accommodate both electrical drive equipment with the transformer required for AC railways and full-fledged diesel-electric drive equipment in a four-axle locomotive while maintaining the required 33 t axle load. This would not have been possible with the slow-running diesel engines commonly used in America, which is why the choice fell on two high- speed diesel engines from Caterpillar , which have a higher power density than the slow-running engines. The motors are electrically connected in parallel to the intermediate circuit of the power converter connected, wherein the AC drive motors and three-phase train line energized.

The electrical equipment of the locomotive is based on the NJT ALP-46A , which uses converters similar to the Bombardier TRAXX locomotives of the German class 186 . In order to create additional space for the drive equipment, the locomotive body was lengthened and a driver's cab was left out, which is not a disadvantage with the locomotive used exclusively in push-pull operation .

The twelve-cylinder engines are of the Caterpillar type 3512C HD. Otherwise this is mainly used in ships and for the energy supply of drilling rigs . The generators are asynchronous machines that are also used to start the diesel engines. When braking, energy is fed back into the contact line network or converted into heat via a braking resistor . The electrical energy is supplied via a pantograph that is mounted in the rear area of the roof. The cooling systems for the drive equipment are housed in the roofs above the relevant equipment.
