The 212 series (from 1971: HLD 62/63 ) is a Belgian locomotive of the NMBS / SNCB with diesel-electric drive from the 1960s, 136 locomotives were delivered from the 1961-1966 total. They were used to replace the last of the steam locomotives on routes that were not electrified . Until 2001/2002, the locomotives were still in regular operation in front of M2 cars on non-electrified routes. Routes on which the HLD 62/63 drove are, for example, Antwerp – Neerpelt (line 15) and Gent – Oudenaarde. The machines were used in front of both passenger and freight trains.

The 6221, 6233, 6247, 6285, 6303 and 6311 have different side windows. These consist of only two parts instead of three.

Origin and use

In addition to the 210 series locomotives, the Belgian State Railways also procured six diesel-electric locomotives with a GM-EMD drive for branch line service . La Brugeoise et Nivelles (BN) built the locomotives in 1961, while the 212,001-003 (from 1971: 6391 to 6393) were Flexicoil - bogies and 212101-103 (1971: 6201-6203) with BN-bogies. Otherwise they were designed identically, with the 12-cylinder GM engine "12-567C", a GM generator and four DC motors "DN 44.1" from ACEC .

Extensive tests have shown the locomotives to be reliable. Between 1962 and 1966, the NMBS / SNCB purchased a total of 130 locomotives with BN bogies in three delivery series, which were put into service as 212.104–233 (from 1971: 6204–6333).

At the end of the 1980s , the 6391–6393 were adapted to the series locomotives, but kept their numbers.

Retirement and re-use

In 2003, the SNCB decommissioned the locomotives due to the commissioning of the class 41 diesel multiple units. In freight transport , the 62 series was replaced by the 77 series.

Many locomotives were handed over to the infrastructure operator Infrabel .

Some locomotives of this series, which were renumbered as series 6700, were used by the Dutch freight carrier ACTS. The former ACTS 6702 (SNCB 6325) is now running at RailReLease in orange / white. For RailExperts / LTE, the ACTS 6703 (SNCB 6391) runs in the old ACTS colors. The other ACTS locomotives (6701 and 6705) are parked in Amersfoort , they are no longer used. The 6302 was repaired after an accident and sold to Venezuela .

Some locomotives of the HLD 62/63 (until 2013) and HLD 55 series are still used by the SNCB to tow defective high-speed trains. They are also used by Infrabel and TUC Rail as work trains and to transport rails and ballast stones. TUC Rail has the machines with the company numbers 6244 (blue), 6250, 6296 (blue), 6297 (blue), 6315 (blue) and 6331.

So far over 55 locomotives have been scrapped. The 6215, 6218, 6264 (with ETCS) and 6311 have been in operation again since 2016, the decommissioned 6211 is located in the Kinkempois depot as a spare parts dispenser.

Since 2011, the locomotives have been repainted in Infrabel's blue color scheme. At the end of 2018, two thirds of all machines were painted blue (41 copies), compared to 22 yellow-green machines.

The last green HLD 62/63, the 6219 from the Merelbeke depot, was repainted in the green design of 1970 by some active railway employees of Infrabel Gent Zeehaven and NMBS CW Mechelen in 2015. Since this refresh, the 6219 has been visually serviced by the same people.

The 6306 was first kept for a museum by the NMBS, but it was abandoned in 2015. The green 6289 is maintained by TSP and is currently being restored in Saint-Ghislain . The 6266, also from TSP, served as a spare parts dispenser and was scrapped in Saint-Ghislain in 2017.

TBL 2 and ETCS

TBL2 locomotives 6313 and 6324 tow a Thalys

For the maintenance of the HSL 2 , four locomotives were modified with the TBL 2 safety system and equipped with special couplings in order to tow defective high-speed trains. The numbers in question were 6225, 6227, 6313 and 6324, which were stationed in Leuven. This mission ended on December 31, 2013. During the construction of HSL 4 (and HSL Süd in the Netherlands ), locomotive 6264 was equipped with the European train control system ETCS .
