According to the law , a German silent film drama from 1919 starring Asta Nielsen in the lead role.

action

The journalist Sonja Waler met the doctor Albert Holm through her brother, the doctor Erich, and her fiancé Arthur, who also worked as a journalist. He is in the process of developing a serum that promises to cure lupus. But Holm will probably never bring it onto the market due to a lack of the necessary financial resources, as there is not enough money to manufacture and distribute the material. Sonja is enthusiastic about this doctor and tries everything to find the necessary funds. Her efforts remain unsuccessful, and so Sonja decides to act desperately: she strangles the common usurer armies and robs him of all his finances. She hands over the money to Holm, who can now complete his serum development. When the murder of the usurer is discovered, Sonja's conscience begins to stir and she surrenders. A sensational process ensues that ends with Sonja's conviction. Before she has to be behind bars for four years, she makes a statement in the courtroom with her head held high: "I am guilty according to the law, but I feel free".

Production notes

According to the law , film censorship passed in September 1919 and a youth ban was imposed. The first performance took place on September 26, 1919 in the Berlin Sportpalast-Lichtspiele. Siegfried Wroblewsky designed the film structures.

Reviews

“However, Ernst Lubitsch's art of directing is missing here, whose generous presentation is in itself a recommendation for a film. Asta Nielsen carries the piece. Your most internalized game makes you forget the shortcomings of logic. She knows how to convey the impressions of the tour of the hospital movingly, her mute expression as a defendant is eloquent. Wherever Nielsen merely puts her art of characterization in the foreground and completely dispenses with external means, she has a profound effect. Of the other actors, Theodor Loos stood out as a doctor and Guido Herzfeld in particular as a typical usurer. "
