Night in Tangier (Original title: Sur la planche ) is the feature film - debut of the Moroccan documentary film director Leïla Kilani . It ran in the side series "Quinzaine des réalisateurs" at the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival . On 29 November 2011, the film premiered at the Berlin Festival Around the World in 14 film 's premiere in Germany.

action

The friends Badia and Imane are poorly paid workers with hair nets and pull shrimp in a factory every day. At night, however, they dive into another world and go out to be towed away by men and then brazenly steal from them . They sell the stolen goods to street vendors. The restless Badia in particular stubbornly dreams of a better life and, in search of better pay, sneaks into the well-guarded special economic zone at the port that connects Tangier with Europe .

One night Badia and Imane get to know two other girls, Asma and Nawal, who are both already working in this secluded piece of Europe on Moroccan soil. A nocturnal gang forms out of the four and in the hope of a leap into a better life they finally plan a particularly big coup under the leadership of the assertive Badia with a delivery of expensive smartphones as prey.

background

Leïla Kilani developed her social drama with amateur actresses and used a documentary character with many night shots to draw a picture of the pulsating, up-and-coming port city of Tangier in northern Morocco from the perspective of young women workers , who not only have the chance of a better life in the strictly guarded special economic zone but also in stealing from better-off men.

3sat showed the film for the first time on German television on March 7, 2013 as part of the “Women in Islam” series. It has since been shown several times on television, most recently on February 10, 2015 on ZDFkultur . The broadcasts of the unsynchronized film were subtitled .

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews. The film magazine Cinema judged that Kilani was drawing “a rough world with impressive amateur actresses and in direct, almost documentary images”. The film service described the film as a "mixture of crime film and social drama". The film conjures up “the energetically charged atmosphere of the lively city” and deals with women “who want to take their fate into their own hands”. The ZDF spoke of "excellent leading ladies, all amateurs with no previous acting experience"; the film itself is “bursting with raw energy and urban poetry”.
