The Nagyerdei Stadium ( German  Großwald Stadium or Debrecen Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Hungarian city of Debrecen in the east of the country. The old stadium with athletics facility , on the basis of which the new building was built, was completed in 1934. Most recently the stadium had seating for 10,000 visitors without floodlights or scoreboards. Of the 5,600 seats in the main stand, 600 were covered.

After the renovation from 2013 to 2014, the new venue offers spectators 20,340 covered seats. After more than twenty years of absence, the new arena is home to the Debreceni VSC football club .

history

The old stadium

After the opening of the facility was celebrated on June 5, 1934, the first football match took place in the stadium shortly afterwards on June 24. In the second leg of the second leg of the Mitropa Cup, the opponents of Bocskai FC and AGC Bologna faced each other. After a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, it was enough for Bocskai FC only to a 2-1 win over the northern Italians. In 1952, an international match between the B national teams of Hungary and Bulgaria attracted 32,000 spectators to a record number of visitors.

The Debreceni VSC rose in 1993 to the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. , the highest football league in Hungary. The aged Nagyerdei Stadium did not meet the requirements of the first division and the DVSC had to move to the Oláh Gábor úti Stadium . The Debrecen Gladiators American football team was also based at Nagyerdei Stadium. In addition to the sporting events, the Debreceni Virágkarnevál ( German  Debreziner Flower Carnival ) and the music event Campus Fesztivál had a permanent place in the stadium.

The new Building

In September 2010 it was decided to build a new stadium. The consortium “Hajrá, Debrecen!” ( German  forward, Debrecen! ) to the two companies HUNÉP Universal Épitőipari Zrt. and Épker Service Épitőipari Zrt. was selected for construction in mid-January 2013. With a planned budget of HUF 11.445 billion, the offer remained around 10% below the amount of HUF 12.5 billion in the tender . BORD Építész Stúdió is responsible for the design of the event location .

On January 29, 2013, in the presence of Mayor Lajos Kósa and other celebrities such as Sports Minister István Simicskó, the demolition work for the new building officially started.

The demolition of the old facility lasted until mid-February. For the laying of the foundation stone on April 11, 2013, representatives of the city and the construction companies, the ministers of culture, investors and the Debreceni VSC met. The first parts of the roof structure could already be installed in June 2013. In October 2013, construction work was well advanced. Most of the steel roof beams were installed and the laying of the underfloor heating had begun.

The completion of the new building was approaching in April 2014. On May 1, 2014, after a construction period of 14 months, the stadium was opened as planned. A few days before the new opening, there was a fatal accident in the stadium. A worker fell from the roof during an inspection and was killed. With the first division game Debreceni VSC against Újpest Budapest (3-1) on May 10, 2014, the first game took place in front of a sold out house. On May 22nd, 2014 the new home of the DVSC celebrated its international game premiere. The men's teams from Hungary and Denmark parted in a friendly game with a 2-2 draw.

With its 20,340 covered seats (including 150 seats for journalists and 50 seats for commentators and 26 VIP boxes), it is the second largest football stadium in the country after the Groupama Aréna . It meets the requirements for UEFA stadium category 4 .

The spectators on the four stands can sit under a translucent membrane roof structure. The main grandstand towers above the other tiers, so the roof line drops over the back gate to the opposite grandstand. The seating is in the club colors of the home team and consists mainly of red and white plastic seats. The venue is surrounded by a colorful park .
