The MOL Aréna Sóstó is a football stadium in the Hungarian city of Székesfehérvár . The football club MOL Fehérvár FC plays its home games here. The 14,201-seat venue was built on the grounds of the Sóstói Stadium , the previous home of MOL Fehérvár FC. The main sponsor of the club, the mineral oil company MOL , is also the namesake of the stadium. During the construction work, MOL Fehérvár FC played its home games in the Pancho Arena in Felcsút, around 42 km away .
history
The Sóstói Stadium, which opened in 1967, no longer met the requirements of modern football stadiums and was in need of renovation. Some renovation work was carried out in the 2000s. The impetus for the construction of the new facility came from a national stadium refurbishment program for the first and second Hungarian leagues . The plans were drawn up in 2014/15, which provided for the elimination of the athletics facility and the construction of three new grandstands behind the goals and on the back straight. The main stand was to be retained and modernized. The MOL Aréna Sóstó was to be integrated into the surrounding protected area with the Sós-tó , a salt lake that lies behind the back straight in the east.
The new system was designed by the architectural office SAMO from Budapest . It was calculated that the work would take just under 14 months. The cost of the stadium alone was estimated at under 13 billion forints (around 40.5 million euros ). Including other costs, it should end up being just over 14 billion forints. Construction began in November 2016. Static problems in the main stand were discovered during construction . This brought changes and delays. Most of the audience area had to be demolished and rebuilt. The 14 months turned into almost two years of construction at 22. On November 21, 2018, the inauguration was celebrated with a league game in front of 11,251 spectators against Újpest Budapest (1-0). Roland Juhász scored the first goal in his new home .
The stadium was not fenced in, in order to fit harmoniously into the 23,000 m² green area with paths and a 30-meter-high observation tower behind the south stand. In the end, the costs amounted to 13.98 billion forints (around 43.64 million euros). The renovated main grandstand slightly towers above the three new tiers. The stadium can be illuminated in the club colors red and blue. The seating is also kept in the colors of the club. The V-shaped steel beams of the roof structure dominate the facade. Behind the south stand there are some training grounds and an athletics facility that existed before the stadium was renovated. The audience capacity has remained almost the same compared to the old Sóstói stadium with 14,300 seats.
