The Waldbad Zeischa recreational area is located in the east of the southern Brandenburg spa town of Bad Liebenwerda between the districts of Dobra and Zeischa on the federal road 101 . The center of the area, which is currently still under mining law, is an approximately 80 hectare gravel pit.

history

Gravel works

In 1888, the Liebenwerda merchant and factory owner Carl Weiland began mining gravel and sand north-east of Zeischa. The raw materials were initially extracted manually. As production increased, bucket chain excavators were also used in the pit. The transport from the pit took place by means of a field railway.

Weiland initially primarily supplied road construction and the progressive railway construction also brought increasing sales. Soon a hard stone factory was built and the Zeischa gravel turned out to be very good concrete gravel even without extensive processing .

Later, the company received a small loading station and a siding to the Węgliniec – Falkenberg / Elster railway line , which also used areas in the Haidaer Flur and was also served at times by the local gravel works via a 1.5-kilometer field railway. Around 1900 the property was divided into two lines. On the one hand the so-called Liebenwerda gravel line with the gravel pit in Zeischa and on the other hand the line of the manor in Maasdorf under Paul Weiland with quarries in Schwarzkollm and Kamenz .

The ownership of the Maasdorf manor was finally divided up in 1945 in the course of the land reform , with the exception of the Schwarzkollm quarry, which only became state property in 1973. The Zeischa family property also became public property .

It could only be bought back by the heirs after the German reunification .

By the turn time increasing construction activity in the new federal states , the demand for gravel and sand from Zeischa increased. The west bank of the gravel pit, where the raw materials have been extracted using floating dredgers since 1970 and where push and barges have been used since the gravel extraction field was expanded in 1984, was still bordered by the Zeischa - Dobra local road at that time. In the period that followed, the mine expanded rapidly so that the local connection to Dobra was soon broken. The gravel was transported to the plant via conveyor belts that were kilometers long, some of which were mounted on pontoons in the lake.

The Zeischaer Kieswerk changed operator in 2002. Due to the massive slump in sales over the past few years, some of the systems had to be dismantled.

The approximately three hectare forest pool Zeischa , which is located in a bay in the southeast of the pit, is a public outdoor pool and part of the gravel pit in Zeischa. In addition to a guarded parking lot and a restaurant, there is a campsite with 137 parking spaces and rental bungalows.

Long before the area was designated as a recreational area, the residents of the area used the pit, which filled with water at an early stage, for bathing and swimming. In 1964 the first cottage settlement was finally built in Zeischa. In 1970 the forest pool opened and the area was designated as a local recreation area. A special purpose association was founded to operate the area, to which the then district town of Bad Liebenwerda and the communities of Dobra, Prieschka , Zeischa and Zobersdorf belonged. In addition to a lifeguard hut, the facility also features a diving platform, boat rental, mini golf, two bowling alleys and an open-air stage. In addition, the building of today's restaurant "Zum Waldbad" was built. That initially offered space for a snack bar and changing rooms. There was also an open-air cinema on the site in summer. In the immediate vicinity of the forest pool, a holiday camp and a branch of the Bad Liebenwerda “Young Naturalist Station” were built.

future

Since an end to mining in Zeischa is now in sight, a concept for tourism and nature-friendly tourism is currently being drawn up on behalf of the city administration for the entire area, which is currently still under mining law and is being considered in the spa development plan of Bad Liebenwerda as a future recreation and water sports center Subsequent use worked out.
