naiin - no abuse in internet e. V. is a non-profit association of companies in the Internet industry and the Internet community for the purpose of combating Internet crime and self-regulation . The association, based in Berlin , was founded on August 18, 2000 by representatives from the industry, politics and society . Helmut Thoma has been the patron since then . The website (naiin.org) has been offline since October 2016 and there is no longer any response to e-mails.

Focus

naiin is directed against any misuse of the internet for criminal purposes and advocates strengthening consumer and data protection as well as civil rights on the internet. The main topics include terrorism , child pornography , political extremism , phishing , information security , piracy , protection of minors , spam and mobile communications .

tasks

The association names strengthening self-regulation in the internet economy as a central task . On the one hand, naiin is pursuing the goal of avoiding overregulation. On the other hand, the association sees self-regulation as a way of establishing internationally uniform standards in dealing with Internet crime and in consumer and data protection. In particular, naiin develops codes of conduct that companies can commit to. The association also operates a complaints office for illegal Internet content.

Of central importance is also responsible for naiin reconnaissance one of Internet users on cybercrime. This should take place through campaigns, events, lecture series, cooperation with the media and educational institutions as well as public relations . In addition, naiin conducts research on behalf of authorities , research institutions, associations and companies, develops technical and legal measures against Internet crime and bundles know-how and expertise within the framework of task forces (working groups) . In this context, the association sees itself as a platform for its members to exchange experiences.

Naiin performs special tasks exclusively for its members. These include taking on the role of mediator to mediate disputes between member companies and their customers, abuse management and various monitoring and screening services. In addition, member companies can appoint naiin as an external data protection and youth protection officer and thus meet their legal obligations.

Members and donations

The association is financed through memberships and donations . Members of naiin can be companies of any size and individuals . When it comes to corporate memberships, the association differentiates between supporting, full and platinum membership. Supporting members have no voting rights at the general assembly . According to the company, the number of members, sponsors and supporters of naiin is in the five-digit range worldwide. One of the biggest corporate member and also a founding member of the Internet service provider Strato , who now for the Group of AG Deutsche Telekom is one.

Complaints Office

Since November 2000, naiin has been operating an international complaints office through which Internet users can report illegal content by name or anonymously. After a preliminary legal check by naiin, the information is forwarded to the responsible law enforcement authorities and responsible providers in Germany and abroad. The complaints office is available in German and English.

In the period from 2000 to 2005, the association investigated more than 126,000 reports of illegal Internet content. 57 percent of these references concerned child pornography .

Awards

In May 2002, the German government recognized the association as an ambassador for tolerance for its work in the field of fighting right-wing extremism on the Internet .

Own memberships

naiin is a member of the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance initiated by the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Ministry of the Interior and supports the initiative against child pornography initiated by the German police . The association is also a supporter of the working group for data retention , the largest civil society initiative against the EC directive on data retention (2006/24 / EC) .
