Attractions
The only sight of Janjgir is the temple , built in the 12th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu . It is the only temple in the entire state of Chhattisgarh whose architecture and sculptural decorations are nearly state-of-the-art. The temple, standing on a large platform ( jagati ) and raised again by a base zone, consists of a small closed anteroom ( antarala ) and a slightly larger and externally strongly structured cella ( garbhagriha ), the tower structure ( shikhara ) of which, however, has remained unfinished. The decorative figures on the outer walls include images of gods (including Brahma , Narasimha, etc.), “Heavenly Lovers” ( mithunas ), “Beautiful girls” ( surasundaris ) and - downgraded - half-naked ascetics and rising lion monsters ( yalis ). A circumferential elephant frieze is integrated into the base zone, which means that the entire building - in a sovereign sense - is supported by elephants. On both sides of the portal there are three life-size figures, the two inner ones can be identified as female river deities Ganga and Yamuna ; the four outer ones are male and marked as guardians ( dvarapalas ) by their weapons .
