Nalini Nadkarni (born October 19, 1954 in Bethesda , Maryland ) is an American biologist .

Her father was from India and her mother was Jewish from Brooklyn . She is married to John Longino, who teaches at the University of Utah , and has two children.

At Brown University she made a first degree. Then she moved to the University of Washington in 1983, where she did her Ph.D. She then spent a year as a postdoc at Texas State University-San Marcos . From 1984 to 1989 she was an assistant professor at the University of Washington and from 1989 to 1991 research director at the Botanical Gardens in Sarasota . Since then she has worked at Evergreen State College and is also an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington.

She devoted all of her scientific work to the ecology of the rainforest, especially its umbrella . She made numerous scientific publications and was recognized by several scientific organizations, including the 2007 Grace Murray Hopper Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2002 an ant species (Procryptocerus nalini) from the subfamily of knot ants was named after it. In 2008 a species of lichen (Porina nadkarniae) from the order of the Ostropales was named after her.
