Nam Kyung-pil (born January 20, 1965 in Yongin , Gyeonggi-do ) is a South Korean politician of the conservative Bareun party . From 1998 to 2014 he was a member of the South Korean National Assembly and has been the incumbent 34th Governor of Gyeonggi Province since 2014 .

Life

Nam Kyung-pil is the eldest son of the politician and entrepreneur Nam Pyeong-woo and his wife Kim Min-jung. Nam graduated from Yonsei University in 1988 with a degree in social affairs and then worked as a journalist for Kyeongin Ilbo ( 경인 일보 ), a newspaper in Gyeonggi-do owned by his father. From August 1995 to May 1996 he studied at the Yale School of Management , a graduate school affiliated with Yale University , where he obtained his MBA in Public and Private Management .

On March 13, 1998, his father Nam Pyeong-woo, who had been a member of the National Assembly since 1992 and was most recently a member of the conservative Hannara party , died. In the by-elections on July 21, 1998 , Nam Kyung-pil ran for the Hannara Party for his father's former direct mandate in the Paldal-gu constituency. He won the election against the candidate of Saejeongchi Gungminhoeu (National Congress for New Politics) Park Wang-sik with 44.6% of the vote. In the elections for the 16th to 19th National Assembly, he was able to defend his mandate for the Hannara Party, which was renamed the Saenuri Party in 2012 .

On May 15, 2014, Nam resigned from the National Assembly to run for governor in the upcoming local elections for Gyeonggi-do Province and just won the election with 2,524,981 (50.43%) votes against the Deobureo candidate -minju party Kim Jin-pyo with 2,481,824 (49.57%) votes.

On November 22, 2016, Nam Kyung-pil and Kim Yong-tae , members of the National Assembly, announced that they were leaving the ruling Saenuri party, opposing the party leadership, which consists of supporters of President Park Geun-hye , who has since October is under massive criticism for corruption allegations . Together with other former members of the Saenuri party, they founded the conservative Bareun party in January 2017 . On January 25, 2017, Nam announced that he would run for president of South Korea in the next presidential election in 2017 .

Nam Kyung-pil was married to Lee Ji from 1989 to 2014, and they have two sons.
