The Roman Catholic parish church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is a classicist central building in Oberdischingen in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the parish of Oberdischingen in the pastoral care unit Donau-Riss of the diocese Rottenburg-Stuttgart and is called the Swabian Pantheon because of its unusual architecture .

History and architecture

The shape of the church can be understood as part of the planned transformation of the village into a residence by Franz Ludwig Schenk von Castell . In 1770 the new building was planned by Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret . The foundation stone was laid in 1800, the interior work was carried out by building officer Bühler in the years 1828–1832, the church was consecrated in 1835. The tower was only built in 1892/1893 by the chief architect Buck. Renovations took place in the years 1907–1912 and 1967/1968.

Outside are on the north side of a Tuscan columns portico , in front of the temple pediment on the south side of the neo-Baroque bell tower. Inside, the church is a rotunda vaulted with a hemispherical dome based on the model of the pantheon with four pairs of Ionic columns, inscribed in the center with a Greek cross . Due to the late Classicist redesign, the original spatial effect is only approximately imaginable.

The central dome room was formerly surrounded by a circumferential gallery, which repeated the circular shape of the central beam, which apparently rests on the pillars. The dome-covered rotunda in the middle was therefore surrounded by a lighter series of two-storey rooms, the southern four of the former 14 windows of which were later walled up. The high altar was originally supposed to be set up in the center under the now closed circular opening; However, this plan was rejected as impractical when the interior was being completed. The dome room is now open to the light cross arms and its centralizing character is impaired by the orientation towards the high altar in the south, the other furnishings and the large, lower organ loft. In contrast, the fluted ionic columns are emphasized more strongly.

Furnishing

The originally pure white version of the unadorned room was enriched in 1897–1911 by the gilding of the capitals and the redesign of the end as a cassette dome. At that time, the pulpit and choir organ were also built in a neoclassical design between the side columns of the chancel. The late Classicist side altars with pictures of Saint Joseph and the Madonna in Nazarene style were moved to the south walls of the cross arms. The former picture of the high altar with a depiction of the Sacred Heart is now housed in the eastern arm and stands opposite the coat of arms of Count Franz Ludwig Schenk von Castell from 1800.

Several stone reliefs originally belonged to the rood screen of the church of Blaubeuren monastery . The heavily undercut reliefs calculated on the soffit depict the crucifixion and other scenes from the life of Jesus and were created by Master Anton in 1501. The baptismal font is of baroque origin and has a hump kuppa . A sedentary Heart of Mary -Madonna with the Kontrapost hugging stance from 1735 is Dominic Hermenegild Herberger attributed and presented the Christ child and the heart.

The organ is a work of the Späth Orgelbau company from 1974 with 30 registers on three manuals and a pedal , which was overhauled in 2010 by Eduard Wiedenmann.
