The Namibia Agricultural Union or Afrikaans Namibia Landbou Unie (NAU / NLU; in German about Namibian Agricultural Association ) is the umbrella organization for agriculture in Namibia . It is based in the capital Windhoek and is a member of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers .

Most of the Namibian commercial farmers are united in the Union . The NAU / NLU is a recognized mouthpiece for farmers and is recognized by the state. It is represented locally by numerous largely independent farmers' associations (Farmer's Association, Boerevereniging). With AgriForum, it publishes a monthly specialist magazine on agriculture.

Braai competition

An annual braai competition has been held in Namibia since the early 1990s . This was initially known as the Inter Farmers' Association Braai Competition . For several years this was organized by the slaughterhouse company Meatco under the name Meatco National Braai in the mid-2010s . Since 2015 it has been in the hands of the NAU again under the name NAU – NLU AgriBraai .

The competition has a different theme every year. So the 2018 event was themed Cattle Country Cowboy . The host was the Kalahari Oos Farmers Association in Gobabis , which won the 2017 competition.

procedure

The event lasts two days and the competition groups can consist of a maximum of four participants. There are two types of participant groups: the groups with participants from the farmers' association and freely composed groups (afrikaans sosiale span ) with participants who are not directly connected to the farm system. The groups are introduced to the guests on Fridays at 6 p.m.

The meals, from starters to desserts , must be prepared by the groups on fire or charcoal. Electricity and gas may not be used. Prohibited products include instant sauces, home-made products, and monosodium glutamates .

On Saturdays at 6 a.m., the groups will be informed of the menu to be prepared. The assessment starts at 11:00 a.m. Kitchen hygiene , food preparation, teamwork within the group and compliance with the rules are assessed. Three experts judge the courts. The drinks are not judged. The friendliness and the presentation of the stands will be assessed separately.

There is feedback to the groups on Saturday afternoons. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. The first prize in 2018 was NAD 30,000 . The prize money is to be used for the organization of the next competition, which will take place in the winners' farmer community.

The competition is a social event where the farmers, the farm workers and the town or village communities from all over Namibia meet. In addition to the actual occasion of the braai competition, musical entertainment and, for example, archery competitions take place.
