Ferdinandus "Nando" Jacobus Aloysius Schellen (born October 11, 1934 in The Hague ; † March 28, 2016 in Phoenix (Arizona) ) was a Dutch opera director .

Life

His father comes from a family of freight forwarders; his mother, who died when he was seven years old, was a pianist. It was also she who initiated her son's musical training. From 1947 to 1957 Nando Schellen attended the Jesuit- led Catholic school community De Breul in Zeist .

Schellen was artistic director of the Dutch Opera in Amsterdam from 1969 to 1986 and also the youngest to date. He directed the performance of The Magic Flute at the Holland Festival in June 1982. At the Bayreuth Festival he worked from 1979 to 1982 under Götz Friedrich as assistant director and Harry Kupfer as dramaturge.

For three years he worked as interim director at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam . He was the director of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble for 23 years . From 1992 to 1996 he was the artistic director of the Indianapolis Opera .

He also wrote as an opera critic for various European and American magazines.

He began teaching as artistic director from 1998-2000 at the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in northern Italy. This operated under the name "Oberlin at Casalmaggiore" until 2010 because the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio had been a co-initiator since the festival began in 1995. In 2000 he moved to Flagstaff , Arizona (USA) with his new wife, soprano singer and associate music professor Deborah Raymond , and began teaching at Northern Arizona University from the age of 65 until he left in 2015 . With his wife he founded the opera festival “Flagstaff in Fidenza” in 2007, in which Italian opera is honored in rehearsals and performances. He was then the artistic director for five summers and practically trained young singers in the opera field.

At the age of 80 he died after a brief illness on March 28, 2016 in Phoenix.
